so with luck ill fix it or totally stuff it

No problem John

It could be loose bolts but assuming it is a plated diff could be worse unfortunately http://www.lancerregister.com/showthread.php?t=339240.

The bolts on the helical diff come loose because there's only 4 of them and they're not really up to the job. Plated LSDs tend to have a lot more bolts so it's often something else that fails.

Hopefully it'll be an easy fix for you.

Cheers,

Simon

Hi guys thanks so much for the informative post. I just imported an evo 4 from japan and unfortunately had a bunch of inexperienced guys touch the car. I am experiencin a similar problem with my car.i wanted to ask is it possible to have the same problem on an evo 4? And any ideas on what would cause oil to leak from my rear diff? I've searched the forums and haven't found any description with my same problem. It seemsto be leaking oil from the join. No visible damage.like crack etc. Appreciate any help .

Hi all the 4 bolts you are on about hold the cap on to the front diff which is located in the transfer box. The upgrade is to replece with 12.9 bolts which you can get from any good nut and bolt stockist. The shuddering and clunking feeling is the diff coming apart when accelerating this will happen to all RS diffs plate or gear type when the bolts break.
Please contact me if you need more info

There are no plated type front diffs fitted as standard.

Fitting 12.9 bolts will not solve the problem, only lengthen the time to failure.

This has worked for all the diffs that i have done for motorsport use. the plate diff is a ralliart upgrade for Group N competition from the gear type as it was not legal to run in Group N. But i thought this thread is to help not to confuse people

This thread is about the standard fit Helical LSD, the Ralliart diff is neither standard fit, nor suffers from broken bolts, so why mention it and confuse people?

I know of many privateers that break 'uprated' 12.9 loctited-in bolts every 90 stage miles, and have worked with one resolving the issue with a different design.

The ones that haven't broken with motorsport use can't be being used very hard as this is a design fault, regardless of which grade bolt is used. If the diff is analysed it's quite easy to see why and how they come loose and break.

do only the older cars have front diff problems?

Newer cars seem to have different type of bolts IIRC...
I loctited mine in just in case... on my 9

quite a simple job really...

Anyone on this? I have an 8 GSR (AYC) and am experiencing the clunking too!

well, take the transfer box off and open it... it is quite a simple job really (if you have access to a two post lift).. much easier than doing the clutch..

Yes, my mechanics are working on it, just wanted to know if this is a known issue also on 8GSR's?
