Standard oil weight specification is 75w90 for the Gearbox, transfer box and rear differential. A 75w140 weight oil can be used to give better protection when oil temps are high, such as on track, or in high powered cars. The negatives of this are higher transmission losses at normal temperatures, and possible stiffness in the gearchange when the oil is cold.

AYC and SAYC - AYC used on E4-7/E8 260 uses a NON LS GL5 gear oil to lubricate the differential part (Left side casing) - AYC and SAYC used on E8/9 uses an LS gear oil to lubricate the differential (Left side casing)

LS = Limited Slip gear oil for plated limited slip differentials, or non LS gear oil with a friction modifier added, such as Redline Friction Modifier.

ATF-SPIII is Automatic Transmission Fluid with special additives such as friction modifiers.

ATF oils such as Millermatic ATF-SPIII-WS exceeds Mitsubishi diaqueen SPII, III & IIII specs.

GL4 spec oils are required for gearboxes. **Some GL5 spec oils such as Millers CRX NT or CRX LS NT can be used in gearboxes to give extra protection, but **some GL5 oils are corrosive to syncros so must not be used. Check the manufacturers recommendations.

GL5 spec oils have extreme pressure additives which are required to protect hypoid CWP gears that are in transfer boxes and rear differentials.

If using a plated front limited slip differential in an E4/5/6/7/8/9 transfer box, an LS oil must be used in the gearbox to correctly protect the metal clutch plates in the front differential. Some LS oils are too slippery for the gearbox, but Millers CRX LS oils work very well in the Evo gearbox.

The gearbox oil system pumps oil into the centre bell of the transfer box lubricating the front differential. This oil is separate from the transfer box oil.

An LS oil must not be used in the gearbox if a helical 'TORSEN' diff is used in the gearbox (centre diff) or transfer box (front diff) These types of differential include the standard helical, Quaife and Wavetrac. Helical differentials require internal friction to enable torque transfer. If the oil is too slippery as with LS oils, the torque transfer bias will be reduced.

Clive do you have any recommendation on any make of oils for the RS drive train or are they ok as long as spec is correct  take it you dont sell the oil as im close to you in Bedford? You did advise me a while back when you welded a coolant sensor take off for me on my MG but i cant remember now :wallbang: Evo is a 7 RS Sprint, thanks for any info :smthumbup

SAYC diff gear oil - GL5 spec LS 75w90 - 0.55 litre
SAYC clutch bath - ATF-SPIII - 0.65-0.70 litre
SAYC & ACD Hydraulic system + pipes to ACD and SAYC - ATF-SPIII - 1.9 litre

Hi, does anyone know if the transfer box and the front differential use the same oil supply, i.e. change the transfer box oil and this does the front differential too?
Thanks!
