The Evo X. Is it really such a bad car?

I've had my Evo X now for roughly 6 months now. I really like the car and can't find fault with it. However today I went with my old man to a reputable tuner to have his GTR serviced. While I was there I thought I would ask for a quote from them to do some work for me. The guy basically turned round and said that he wouldn't want to touch it. I asked why and he seemed to reel off a list of problems and faults with the Xs regarding the Rods , gearbox, MAF sensor amongst some other things I can't remember. To say I felt deflated afterwards would be an understatement. I feel like I almost darent drive the thing now because I'm just waiting for it to explode In a fireball of disappointment after the dressing down I got. Surely they can't be that bad?

Had mine almost 4 years now a 300sst had remap to 350 that was better then had exhaust and remap to just over 370 bhp loads better so much more fun. Iv had no trouble as yet just spent money on normal service things and fun stuff. So go for it mate and enjoy it. I give it some stick as well.

I've had mine for nearly 5 months and it's been fine on the whole. Rods are a weakpoint when going for big power and the SST is also the same but it's hardly a ticking time bomb. Granted I went for one with work already done to it but that's because I wanted to let someone elses wallet take the hit :D

Since you are Yorkshire based I'd be interested in knowing which tuner gave you his "advice".

With a few easy upgrades you can have a great all round package.
I recently bough a lovely white one with a damaged engine, fixed that and put Dodson clutch plates in. Really is superb car rest is stock.
MAF sensors seem to be more of an issue with some of the tunes rather than a problem with the part its self in my experience.

Had my X two years now and I can't fault it bar a track rod end and a cracked exhaust manifold it's been pretty trouble free. My mate owned it for two before me and he only had to refurb AYC pump (common problem)

I am running 430 bhp as well. There is some horror stories online but think if you get one that's been well looked after they aren't any less realiable than any other performance car that falls into the same price bracket.

Also factor in, when the 4g63 evo engine was 8 or 9 years old, the MLR for example, was full of horror stories of engines blowing over 350hp, which was then considered the limit for standard rods and Pistons. Parts needed for power were far more expensive than now, ecu's werent mapable, so anything over 350hp needed a stand alone ecu. So to get 400 out of a 4g63 10 years ago, cost thousands more than it does these days

I agree with above though, the large cost of taking a 10 past 380hp at the moment is just too much, several thousand just to prepare for the extra power without the actual cost of the mods that add to the power.

I suspect the X tax will drop over the next few years, and ways to push the boundries for less will continue. Also the other big factor with pushing a 10 is the cost and availability of a replacement engine if it all goes wrong. My 5 ran 400 for many years, I chose to take that chance on standard internals as 4g63 engines were readily available, and cheaper than a rod job or full forge. The same cant be said for the X engine

if you are carefull about TQ, which is what you do on a g63 on stock rods anyhow, X will happily do 450 with a turbo and injector change..

Well that will depend on who is doing the work. Many purport to be 'tuners', when nothing could be futher than the truth, and the people doing the work no more than mechanics just bolting things together, sometimes much worse, with 'mods' being done that are truly horrendous.

i officaled on a rally at the weekend there was an X there doing ,i was never a fan of them before but the more i looked at it the more i liked it ,im now quite a fan of how they look ,and id like to own one day
OK they have there issues but doesnt every car ,its what we love about them isnt it

I have had my x for a year now and it has been a darn sight more reliable than my previous 8mr. I'm running 380/380 with no issues and minimal mods. We will allways get niggles, just part of owning an evo. Yes the parts and upgrades tend to be more expensive but it's a much newer car and to be expected. I would also say the SST if it's serviced properly and at regular intervals should be fairly reliable. I find the x a much more refined car and nicer to use on a daily basis.

Every car has its own set of problems especially performance cars. Key is to research and address common problems or buy a car that has already been done. As with any Evo they can't be scrimped on especially when being tuned,but done correctly and looked after they're a reliable car.
