So this kind of happened.....

A couple of people on here know about this but here goes......

I spotted in the 'Cars for sale' section, a 12k mile Evo6, it had me intrigued.
I left it alone, but kept finding myself re-reading the ad and wondering how good it is, and would it be a good call to buy it and replace ours.

Lots of phone calls, texts, emails and a lot of patience later, we agreed to view the car.

We did the 8hour round trip in our Evo... Set off at 6.30am and arrived at around 11.30am to be greeted to the car out on the drive waiting for us.

First thing I noticed was a few small storage dents, but this is no big deal and easily sorted.
Naunton (the owner) came out to introduce himself and the car, very nice guy.

So then, the interior is literally like brand new, ours is good at only 33k miles but this is like showroom.

The engine bay is again really really good, just in need of a detail and some manifold heat shields & bolts.

The underside is good, not 100% perfect but very good, especially as it is not undersealed.

The only bit that 'put us off' was the bodywork, the front bumper needs re-painting, along with the bonnet, and to do this nicely it means blowing in the front wings. It also has 8 or so small dents which all need pulling out, and it needs a professional mop as its very swirly.

Then looked through all the paperwork history, very very nice paperwork history.

Took the car for a drive, first car I have driven with a twin plate clutch which I dare say will take some getting used to.
Drives very nice, just as you would expect.

After the test drive we spoke about price, I was a little lower than his lowest and after some thought and some chatting we have agreed a price and the car has now been paid for.

It will arrive with us next Wednesday, and I will then begin bringing it right back up to standard.

A few pics here, but they really don't do it justice at all.
These are the pics I was sent of the car before viewing, I didn't take any whilst viewing.

Now then, I could do with some sound advice please.

As the below pic shows, in places the car has really very light surface corrosion underneath.
Its certainly nothing bad, but I want to deal with it the best I can.

Its obviously from when It has got wet, and its never had any underseal on it.
I don't plan on putting any underseal on the car.

I have used kurust before, on very light corrosion, and I think that may well do for this.
I have heard of people using Vinegar, or Ketchup lol, but never tried it myself.

I don't want to be going any grinding, as that is not needed, its simply light surface.

I am ok with the areas treated being 'black' as Kurust does, because I would rather that, than this.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Rich,

First things first, hats off to you for your absolute attention to detail! The final outcome is just amazing! You're a lucky boy to have found something like that. :smthumbup

Seeing this post is several months old now, wanted to send a private message to you but can't seem to do that.

Anyway, was wondering what did you eventually do for the mild surface rust? And how was the end result? I have something similar as well and was wondering what would be the best route.

Cheers! :)

Thanks mate, I do have some very fine wire wool so that could be a good shout :)

I might try it with some vinegar, and if im not happy then some Kurust, but much like yours, I think its mainly staining and in places just light surface so it should come off quite easily.

I don't mind the idea of clear Waxoyl, have you used that on yours?

I have used Clear POR15 on my 205 GTi, which is superb stuff for a track car, as it sets rock hard. But I wouldn't want to put it on this as it can never be removed, or cleaned off.

And I certainly wont put anything black on the bottom of this, as it would ruin it imo.

I used wire wool and some spirit on mine. It was literally stained rather than set in. I could almost do it with just my finger.

I would consider clear waxoyl though.
Thanks for that mate, much appreciated :smthumbup

Might give it a go later, if I find the time to.:wallbang:

The window mouldings hook onto the door skin and there are screw at either end.wait till you get your new one and you will see, seen me get them off with a pick, think there's about four or five bits that's hooked on:thumbup:

Looking good btw!!

So I put a bit of time aside for the Evo lastnight.

First was the inspection of the front box sections, this is a picture before any cleaning of the front box section at all.

I am more than happy with that :)

Than I spent a bit of time giving the engine bay a clean, still more to do but I am waiting on parts before really going full bore on the detailing.

Before:

After:

Gave the intercooler a clean down.

Then went round and swapped all the centre caps.

Before:

After:

Then I dummy fitted the front bumper, just to make sure I was happy with the colour, and that no differences in colour between wings/bonnet to bumper.

Swapped the rear offside outer window seal, and gave the interior a quick going over.

Well I finally finished sorting out the garage at home, and gave the floor its final coat of paint lastnight.

This means I can get the Evo home once the garage floor is dry, and really push on with it.
Will be taking it home from the unit on Thursday, and will be giving it a snowfoam, then a tar remover session, followed by iron-x, and clay bar, so basically give the paintwork a full de-contamination.

Then into the garage, spoiler off, and up on to axle stands.
Wheels and brakes off.

My friend owns www.vdservices.co.uk
He is going to come round and mop the paint for me, then I will finish with a high gloss polish and some nice wax.
Will iron x the wheels, and seal them, along with the calipers.

Then its a case of fitting the parts from Ross Sport once they arrive, and then onto the underside.

Mita and I discussed clear waxes and I think I will be going the same route as him, with the application of clear Dinitrol waxes in the cavitys, arches and the full underside floor.

Stock exhaust going back on, along with stock brakes, and also removing the twin plate HKS clutch in favour of a stock (or Exedy) clutch.

Lots to be doing before the spring :)

Happy new year everybody :)

Hope everybody had a great time.

Small update on the Evo.
Got the car home, as I finally finished painting the garage floor.

Before putting it in the garage I gave it a clean and a clay bar, ready for it being mopped next week.

The car is now up on axle stands, spent a couple of hours detailing the engine bay, and starting on the underside.

Pics...

Should start making some decent progress over the coming weeks, as I say its being professionally mopped next week, all the Dinitrol cavity and underside wax (clear) has arrived, and my order from Ross should be here soon :)

Specialised car covers mate.
They make really nice covers, the one on the Evo looks a bit funny at the front but that's just due to no bumper being fitted.

Looking amazing dude, credit to you - what's left to do to her, and what are you planning on doing, selling her or is she a keeper?
Thanks a lot mate, much appreciated.

Me and the Mrs plan on keeping it for the foreseeable future, doing a few shows (will be doing Japfest with MLR) and enjoying it here & there :):smthumbup

It will also be a little show piece in the showroom when not in use

Lol, thanks mate.

Its not 'perfect' but then no car is to be honest.
I have strived for 'perfection' on previous cars and I get carried away, and it gets damn expensive, and at the end of it your never able to say yes its 'perfect'.

It some ways it is a shame it is so clean, as it would be nice to go 400/400 and some coilovers, space the wheels out etc but original is the order of the day for this particular car.

Made some more progress lastnight, front brakes off (front discs were seized to the hub and took an age to get off)!

Then after much swearing me and the mrs managed to get the spoiler off!

Front bumper and spoiler in the spare room lol.

Thanks very much mate :)

I have been giving it some thought over recent weeks.
I don't really want it back to complete original standard power, as our last one was standard power and this one drives so much nicer with the little bit extra power.

So I was contemplating keeping the Ralliart ECU, as I think Ralliart items are ok, so I am looking for a Ralliart air filter and exhaust for the car as well now.

It had a few Ralliart upgrades when it was new, the gauges, pedals, ECU etc, so I think a air filter and exhaust will compliment these things nicely, and keep it as a better car to drive than totally standard :)

They will be much better suited to the car than a HKS intake and Blitz Nur spec exhaust imo.

Thanks mate :D:smthumbup

Have to agree :smthumbup
I think it makes a lot of sense, I really like how it drives at the minute, and it does seem a shame to go back to complete stock power when the Ralliart extras are OEM anyway.

Looking spot on that
Cheers buddy, you going to Japfest?

May I ask how it drives better than the last? Whats the bhp difference?
Well the last one was completely stock and made a little over stock power.
This one ran 341bhp iirc, so its a 50-60bhp difference.

Most noticeable in the mid range, the last one just seemed a little 'lacking' in the mid range, a little asthmatic almost. This one just feels like its at the power level it should of been from factory to be honest. :smthumbup

I got an hour in the garage tonight, got the sideskirts off, got all the adhesive off the boot from the spoiler, and then thought I would try out the Dinitrol cavity wax, very impressive stuff!

Will be doing some more tomorrow, and then start on the underside.

#156 · (Edited)
So a little brief update, sold the front brake set up, and purchased stock front brake setup, and also some new rear discs whilst I was at it.

Painted the centres & outers silver (no pics but not very exciting).

Then removed the sideskirts, for a few reasons, one is so I can clean behind them, also clean the underside of the sideskirts themselves a little easier and so that when I cavity wax the sills I can go through the holes which the sideskirts clip in to.
The sills are fantastic under the sideskirts which is great.

I then set about trying out the Dinitrol cavity wax, starting with the nearside front box section, really very impressed with the stuff, really nice and easy to apply, and quite enjoyable to be honest.

I was very thorough, in and out of every hole, not matter how close they were to each other on the box section, and sprayed up, down, left, right, and straight ahead.

Then I went underneath and did the jacking point box setion, and chassis rail underside.

I didn't get any pics of once I had finished that side, but a couple of crappy during pics.

A few pics.

I also gave the outside of the box section a light coating, just to see how it looks before I give all the inner arches etc a coating, and looks fine to me...

Then the following evening me and the mrs went out, and she removed all the adhesive from the sideskirts, and then she asked if she could do the cavity waxing on the drivers side, I explained how best to do it, and she got stuck right in, and on inspection had done a better job than me, so I sent her to the side I had done, to go over my initial coatings lol!

And as it currently sits....

We have friends round tonight, but after they leave, I plan to get in the garage, finish fitting the front brakes, possibly cavity wax in the sills, and then mask the car up ready for its machine polishing tomorrow :)

Lol, she loves getting involved, generally if I go in the garage, she goes and gets her scruffs on and comes out asking what she can do :)

You'll be clock watching for your friends to leave so you can get back in there lol
We might of been doing just that lol, they live a fair way from us so they left around 9pm, whioch left us time to get in the garage :)

Cracking work pal, car looks well.

Pete.
Cheers buddy :)

Sometimes that's the best way mate lol, I think lastnight we were out in the garage until about 10.30pm, which isn't too bad.

On previous projects, I have been known to get home from work, straight in the garage until 2-3am, get a bath and a couple of hours kip then back to work first thing in the morning and do that for a few weeks just to get things finished, but I am getting too old for that now lol!

Around 10-11pm and I want the warmth of the house

I am hoping I find a bit of time tonight to get the spoiler back on, and cavity wax the sills but I have 2 cars being collected tomorrow, one of which needs a final detail.
