Rough guide to setting up an AVCR:

1. You need to set up the NE points to start with, 2500, 3500, 4500, 5500, 6000, 6500, 7000, 7500.

Rough guide to setting up an AVCR:

1. You need to set up the NE points to start with, 2500, 3500, 4500, 5500, 6000, 6500, 7000, 7500.

2. set the car settings to 4 4 arrow to the North East.

3. Set the graph scales, speed, boost etc.

4. Set FB speed to 0 and learn gear to X.

5. Ensure the start duty to 0% for all gears.

6. Then set gear judge up, drive along in first, with the AVCR in the Gear Judge menu, you will see the numbers decreasing on the right of the screen. When you get to 2500 rpm in 1st, set the number for that gear, do the same with all the other gears at 2500 rpm.

7. Set desired boost level 1.0 on the AVCR, duty cycle around 50%. Drive in 4th gear at around 2000 rpm, and open the throttle 100% waiting for the boost to build up, get to about 5000 rpm and see what peak boost you made. If it below the 1.6 then raise the duty cycle 1 or 2% and try again, if it above, lower the duty cycle 1 or 2%.
Once the car gets to the correct boost in 4th gear, turn lean gear on in 3rd, 4th and 5th, and go for a hard drive.
This will allow the AVCR to learn the duty cycles accross the RPM range to maintain your desired boost.

8. Once it has done this, the duty cycle in the menu will show ***, as the duty will vary accross the RPM range.

9. You will need to adjust the FB speed if you are getting boost fluctuations, this adjust the response of the boost solenoid.

10. After set the start dutys in 1st to around 8% and see what peak boost you hit, adjust up or down to get the required peak boost level in each gear, repeat for 2nd, 3rd, 4th should be about +1 or +2 and 5th should be something like -1 or -2.

11. Finally go into the duty screen for RPM and lower the duty at 6000 and above a few % to get boost taper at the top end.

Hi guys, I thought you might be interested in the development of my evo build; project eXcalibur.

Many of you know me from way back and know I've always had evos, but I've been hankering for something a little special so thought I'd do my own build, and here it is for you all to see, and maybe get inspired by? I'm going to go into a lot of detail in this blog and leave nothing out.

In April I bought a car, and it looked like this;

I took it to some guy, and three weeks later it looked like this;

He made the badges black, too. They look like this;

The next step in the build was to pay the man so I could drive the car home. The build was coming along nicely and I was inching closer to getting the car set up just how I wanted it. Next step was to fill in the change of car details on the V5 document. This was to let the government know the car had changed colour.

I put that in an envelope and took it to the Post Office and they sent it off. I waited a few weeks and I got a new V5 back. I was now so close to touching the dream...I could smell it. There was one final hurdle though.....

....I had to fill in the license retention document so that I could have my personal plate transferred across.

That's not my actual document, by the way. I found that on the internet. Mine looked the same only it had my details on it. I don't know who this guy is but I hope he doesn't suffer any form of identity theft.

(Edit: I now know who he is. He is an unhappy chappy so I have removed his details :blush: )

I had to buy another envelope and it was another trip to the Post Office and another two week wait. When I got the OK from the government, I put my plate on the car and it looked like this;

It was a long, hard build. The whole thing took me 7 long weeks of waiting. I had to wait three weeks for it to stop being black. Two weeks for the government to know it had stopped being black. Then two weeks for the government to let me tell the world I'm the kind of person who has a personalised plate.

Phew! What a journey, but project eXcalibur is finally complete.

I'd like to thank everyone who helped with this build, but I don't see why I should. They were simply doing their job and were financially remunerated. No-one thanks me for doing my job.

The SST (Sportronic Shift Transmission) offering in the Evo X is Mitsubishi's take at a twin-clutch, 6 speed, semi-automatic transmission. In a nutshell, the twin-clutch design means that two gears can be selected at the same time on separate input shafts; one odd gear and one even. So going up the box, while you are in second gear, third might also be selected so when it comes to change from second to third the clutches are just swapped and third gear is engaged much quicker and smoother than is possible with a manual gear box. The advantages of this are obviously smoother acceleration, less time off the power, and the gear ratios can be shorter. Conversely when braking down the box the smoother changes give the car better stability and less shifting of weight.

The disadvantage is that "something" has to control this wizardry. To that affect the car has three automatic modes; normal, sport and super sport. You change modes by way of a rocker switch next to the "gearstick" - push it forward for sport, forward and hold for super sport, pull it back for normal mode.

Normal mode keeps the selected gear fairly high (5th when cruising at 30 for example), the revs low (it will change up around 3,000) and the gear changes are slower and more gentle. The effect is a very un-evo like evo; the throttle is slow and unresponsive, if you are being a bit quick up the box, the numerous and early gear changes make it somewhat jerky.

Sport mode delays the gear change until higher in the revs, keeps the car in lower gears and also makes the changes themselves a bit quicker. This is closer to how you probably drive your car around town normally. Super sport, as you can imagine, lets the car rev even higher, keeps the gears even lower and makes the changes even faster.

The problem with normal mode is that it's fine for pootling around, but if you need to quickly (safely, if you prefer) pull out of a junction, or onto a roundabout...mmm...doesn't really work. Instead you get a car trying to accelerate from 10 to 30 in 4th gear keeping it under 3000 revs. You can punch the gas harder, but 5th gear at 3000 revs isn't much faster :) The solution is to switch to sport mode first...but that means having to "do something". In a manual car you're always working the gears anyway, so the amount of acceleration you need is always on tap no matter the occasion. With the car in normal mode you get quite passive, and you have to think "junction coming up, better put it in sport mode...right, that's me at 30mph, back into normal mode" and so on. In a manual transmission car if you want more acceleration you simply delay changing the gear you're currently in.

If you're thinking "why not just leave it in sport mode?" - that's the crux of the issue :) As previously mentioned, with a manual transmission you are basically switching between all the "modes" instantly with each gear change. You can pull out in 1st, get lots of thrust, quickly into second for a bit more...then gently into 3rd, 4th and relax. By leaving the car in sport mode when you're cruising along, it is holding low gears, high revs and simply touching the gas makes it want to kick down and roar off. Leaving it in sport mode is like leaving your car in 2nd when driving at 30mph - it's very jerky and keen to go, plus not very economical. So rather than the car being a bit more intelligent and knowing when you want to "go" and when you want to "cruise", it is always in either "cruise" mode (normal) or "go" mode (sport), but real driving just isn't like that.

That brings us onto Super Sport. Jeez, what an animal of a mode. This is for balls-out driving; very responsive throttle, very aggressive gear changing, good use of the torque available at higher revs. Extending the sport mode issue, let's say you use this mode to quickly join a motorway...sure you'll tear up the gears in no time, but when you've joined the motorway and have backed off the throttle, the car is probably holding 6000 revs, just daring you to even breathe on the loud peal. You now need to scrabble to get the box back into normal before the engine jumps out of the car. It has all the problems of sport mode, only amplified.

To the sum the modes up; they are fine at what they do...but what *you* do changes quite quickly and fluidly. A manual box allows you to go quickly through the gears, slowly through, quick then slow, slow then quick...a manual box is ultimate freedom and control. With the SST modes you have to be selecting the one that suits you *right now*, but *right now* will change from corner to corner.

Are they a gimmick? I'd say "no", not a gimmick, just not very practical. You *will* use sport mode a lot at junctions etc, but it's annoying that you have to keep switching from normal to sport to normal and so on. When you're on an empty country road, super sport mode will put a smile on your face...you will grin from ear to ear as the car lurches under you like a horse fighting its reins, desperate to gallop away if you're coming for the ride or not. At this point I might as well let you know the worst thing about super sport...the super spoil sports at Mitsubishi don't want you using it on the road :( You can only engage it from stand-still. This means that if you're cruising through a village and the NSL sign looms in the distance, you can't just flip the switch and unleash hell...if you want to put it in super sport you'll need to pull over and stop first :\ (hopefully someone has found a way to bypass that "feature" by now).

SST modes aside, the gear stick acts like a regular automatic where you move it forward and backward to select park, reverse, neutral, drive etc. It's not all doom and gloom, though, as the gear stick doesn't just go back and forward, it slides to the right too. When you slide the stick right in automatic mode , the car goes into manual mode (it also does this if you pull either gear paddle - but will revert to automatic when you come to a stop - also the auto modes still apply in manual mode, they dictate the gear change speed and how responsive the throttle is). You now have control over the gears and can change them via the paddles on the wheel, or you can use the gearstick which now acts like a sequential shifter, letting you push forward to go down a gear and pull back to go up a gear (there is no clutch, by the way, you just keep your foot down and the car changes for you). This mode alleviates all of the issues with faffing around with the automatic modes...you can go like an animal through the gears, or slowly through the gears. You can hold any revs in any gear, when looking to overtake you can drop a few gears first at hold it at peak torque, or you can drop gears for engine braking (though sport and super sport *do* help with this if you use them), when you are cornering in a gear you stay in it to ensure cornering balance rather than the box deciding to change gear for you mid-corner. On a country road you are back in control, selecting the right gears for any situation or corner, as no matter how clever the car is (and it *is* very clever), it doesn't know the road ahead, it will never drive the car better than a human can. Given that you'd never use super sport on track, and you can't select it on a whim while on the road, the manual mode does make super sport a bit gimmicky. Fun as hell :) but gimmicky.

Can you stall the car? No, you can't. If you are in manual mode and ever slow to the point of stalling, the car will take over, downshift and select automatic mode. As I said - it's very clever. Is it better than a manual? Ummm...no. There is something satisfyingly tactile about a manual box, about knowing what gear you are in by touch, being able to have total control over the gears and feeling at "one" with the car - feeling like the car is an extension of you, unlike with the SST where you feel like you're just sitting in it rather than driving it. Maybe that is just nostalgia for the "old" days, and not fully getting used to the box yet. In terms of driving fast (which is what we bought our evos for) is the SST better? Yes it is. It's clever as hell, it's smooth as hell...it just flows. This is one of those arguments that will never be settled - do you prefer speed over a feeling of being in control? SST evangelists will point out it makes the car faster, manual evangelists will say they prefer the feeling of control. It's another new vs old, AYC vs RS.

For manual mode, the gear change paddles are fixed to the steering column, they don't move with the wheel, so if you keep your hands at "3 & 9", the further into a turn the less able you are to change gear. This helps promote better driving, but sometimes in the real world you do have to change gear mid-turn which is where the sequential stick can really help you. If you are stationary coming onto a largish roundabout you can turn into the roundabout while going up the box sequentially with the stick. On the other hand, if you "shuffle" the wheel then your bad driving is further enhanced by being able to change gear via the paddles mid-corner to your heart's content :)

The best thing about manual mode, however, is the psychology of selecting it. You're driving through some village in normal mode...30mph in 5th gear and life is good. The village thins out, the NSL sign approaches...sliding the gearstick to the right is like turning your baseball cap around backwards. Your whole inner being changes, your senses heighten and your heart races cos you know that now it's business time.

on taking my car back from mot drove 75 yards and lost drive. It goes into gear with the engine not running,but with engine running pressing down clutch pedal just makes a slight wirling noise and will not go into gear. The pedal feels like its working ok. Mechanic looked at it and said the clutch is broken and it would take around 14 hours labour and a new clutch costing £184 plus vat.would this price of a new clutch and 14 hours labour at £40.00 an hour seem resonable.Waiting in anticipation for any reply.

Hi everyone. Recently purchased an E8 on 19" BBS CH alloys, lovely looking wheels but appear to have a major issue :cry: The idiot who had them fitted originally has fallen into what appears to be a common problem and bought them with the 112 pcd and put wheel nuts without the correct 60degree taper on them :wallbang: Subsequently the nuts have worn horribly! Its been suggested that assuming the wheels and hubs/threads aren't damaged then using 'wobble' nuts should be fine, the correct spigot rings are fitted and they sit fine on the hubs themselves. Its obviously just the pcd thats the problem, sooooo does anyone have any experience of the wobble nuts on these wheels? is it safe? im not going to be tracking it, just dont want any disasters! If this is not a reliable option, i understand its possible to have the pcd altered to 114.3 somehow, has anyone any experience of this and if so who does this, where are they and how much!! Im in Norfolk area and im a noob member, any help you can offer would be much appreciated:smthumbup

Well what can I say.....

After much deliberation and thought due to the shear volume and choices on offer I finally purchased a helmet. The helmet (OMP SPEED) arrived Tuesday this week and so I am now 1 step closer to hitting the track.

My only concerns now simply lie with the car itself. Not wanting to track it till it has been forged and had a new clutch. However, this should be sorted come the new year and therefore my list of excuses will all but have been exhausted.

As the MLR had a trackday planned for the 19th of November I decided to pop along with helmet in tow to see what all the fuss is about. As with all MLR events they are all really well organised and run with a good attendance to boot.

I met some familiar faces along with some new and the old chin wag soon ensued. Looking over the vast array of Evo's the cars on show were all impressively presented and set-up, always a tribute to the MLR members.

Needless to say I had an itch that needed scratching so I got talking to a mate of Tommo's and managed to sort a passenger ride out in Rob's VI 600 BHP 2.3 stroker and wow.:eek: I so need to learn how to drive. The EVO is so much more capable than I first thought. In the back of my head coming up to every corner i'm thinking brake, brake, brake.......the car was then thrown round the corner and the throttle pinned to the floor. The sensation was immense. The conditions were damp and the car was scrambling for grip yet performed faultlessly.

Roll on 2011 and getting my first trackday under my belt.:naughty:

CarLimits runs a number of driving days at a number of venues, the one I attended was an airfield day with 4 people, however they run days for 2 people too and I'm sure you could even get them to yourself if you wanted. Having so few people there was good for the turnaround, but as everything was done in your own car there was still a fair bit of waiting around as each person needed instruction on their own while the others waited. At some points you were able to practice other things on your own but that will depend on the format of your day. In terms of time behind the wheel it wasn't the best, but that is reflected in the price. Also as the venue was an airfield that comes with its own limitations such as the playing field being flat and featureless, and the surface not the best either.

The instructor (Andy Walsh) was very flexible and the day is really yours to do what you want with. As we were all fairly green Andy decided on a format with us all doing the same thing, and he picked a range of basic exercises which was fine by us. If you want to learn or practice something in particular then you only have to tell him.

Our day kicked off with something really basic, such as how to hold the steering wheel :) Now don't laugh…I never thought it mattered a toss how you hold the wheel, but once the holding and steering technique was explained to us it all made perfect sense. It also demonstrated how excellently balanced and well engineered our evos are as everything from the physical wheel design to the steering rack itself was perfectly in-tune with this steering technique. Driving a rep-mobile will never be the same again.

Threshold braking was the next task and as with most exercises we first did it as we would naturally which gave Andy an idea of where you need help the most. After a few goes au-natural (which included measuring our braking distances from a set speed) Andy then took us through the ABS system and the theory of braking on the limit. I found his explanations to be very explicit and simple and they helped me a lot. We re-did the braking until Andy has happy and again measured our stopping distances to see how much they had improved. The improvements were not insignificant with 10 feet or so being wiped off a 60-0 stop.

The biggest "deep end" moment was the high speed corner. When I say "corner" I mean 90 degree turn, and when I say "high speed" I mean 90mph. Ever taken a 90 degree bend at 90mph? I certainly hadn't. In Andy's usual style we were first told to "just do it" so he could observe. Not being a foolish man he did his initial observations from the grass verge, and as we had all signed our waivers I had another participant in my passenger seat. I've done some fairly hair-raising driving before that has had passengers squirming in their seats while I have felt 100% poised and in control, but barrelling down a straight at 90mph knowing what I was about to do had me very nervous indeed. What my poor passenger must have been feeling is beyond me. You have to consciously override your body's desire to slow down, or not take the corner at all (or both), but fortune favours the brave so you throw the car into the corner and all hell breaks loose.

When your car is finally stationary Andy joins you and takes you through what happened and why. He then takes you as a passenger in your own car while he shows you what you could have won. After his instruction and a few more goes you're soon taking that corner in triple figures.

Probably the best exercise we did was the understeer one. As with the other exercises Andy's explanations of what is happening and why are very explicit and easy to understand and follow. Using the massive area at his disposal you undergo an exercise where you manoeuvre the car to spots he tells you with the steering wheel locked in a fixed position - all manoeuvring is done using nothing but the throttle. As well as giving you a good foundation of a number of driving disciplines, this exercise also really taught you the limits of your car and how it feels just under the limit, on the limit and just over the limit so that you are more aware of your car's traction and what it is communicating to you through the controls.

To cap it all off Andy cones out a circuit where you do some timed laps both under his instruction and also on your own. At this point in the day Andy broke off a little and gave me slightly different instruction from what he gave the others as they were shown how not to drive, and then how to drive, but I was not given the "how not to drive" instruction because "evos are so hard to get out of shape". I'd rather he had told me it was because of the exceptional talent I had demonstrated throughout the day :)

As well as being great fun it finally gave us a chance to put it all together and also pitch ourselves and our cars against each other. Andy initially did the circuit himself in our cars to give us a target to aim at, and from then on we spent the remainder of the day trying to get faster and faster. When we were all driven out Andy took as around the course in his Elise and showed us all how far we still have to go.

Note that since I did my day the venues and formats might have changed but I doubt Andy's flexibility in centring the day around you has changed. And while the time you spend behind the wheel isn't abundant, as with all driving days they are teaching you the techniques and you have to go off and perfect them on your own. The CarLimits day definitely taught me some of the most useful things of the driving days I have been on so far (the techniques we learned tended to be more practical than you usually get), and I came away with a great deal of confidence in the car. Andy's instructing style is clear and easy to follow and he had a good balance between "we're here to learn" and "let's d**k around a bit".

"Keep to the left, threshold brake, turn, back on the throttle, trail brake and dig in, double apex but hold a single line, brake, feather the throttle and constant speed through these bends..." That's about 15 seconds worth of instructions you'll be processing when you're on a CAT Driver Training Day such as the one recently organised by the MLR's driver training co-ordinator. The previous days looked like great fun so I didn't have any hesitation in signing up for the latest one.

After driving up the night before and staying over, I woke to a thankfully dry Mother's Day and before leaving for the venue I first undertook a quick weight-saving exercise...Little Chef agreed to exchange 8 of my bulky, heavy pound coins for a rasher of bacon, a sausage, a hash brown, an egg and 12 beans. Car and body both fuelled (car more than body) I was finally ready for the day.

Millbrook differs from track circuits in that it is a proving ground, so everything is designed to test some aspect of car dynamics. The tracks are all twisting and torturous with adverse cambers, blind apexes, and lots of ups and downs. In addition it has a high-speed bowl and a mile-long straight so it has everything for really testing your driver skills as well as being totally safe. When it comes to driver training, tracks and airfields just can't compete.

The format of the day is briefly as follows; threshold braking on the mile-long straight, direction changes and steering on the high-speed bowl, cornering on the handling circuit, racing lines on the alpine circuit, understeer and oversteer on the steering pad and finally a timed gymkhana in a Caterham (also on the steering pad). Each exercise begins with the instructor taking you out in groups in a CAT demo car (nothing exciting I'm afraid...unless you find a Mondeo exciting) to run through it so when it's your solo turn you already know exactly what you're supposed to be doing.

You are split into two groups of four and each group is assigned an instructor (I had Colin). The ethos behind the training is multi-faceted. You're taught some of the physics behind tyres, suspension etc so that it becomes clear why you're being asked to do the things you are asked to do, and how to optimise handling. You also have the standard driving techniques you'd expect to be taught (apexes, driving lines etc) and as well as the driving techniques you're learning what your natural driving instincts are and when and how to overcome them. For example, an exercise on the high-speed bowl is to rapidly change lanes back and forth. Seems easy, yet when left to drive naturally you'll either do it while accelerating or braking. The instructor explains the physics behind what you're doing and why maintaining a steady speed is actually the best course. So changing lanes isn't really the exercise, what you're actually working on is overriding your bad driving instincts with good ones, enabling you to drive through chicane-like situations while maintaining a steady speed.

As well as your driving instincts, there are physiological things you're trained on that you may not have appreciated before, such as the concept of you steering where you look. Early on you learn to "look where you want to drive" and it is well illustrated on the high-speed bowl. While driving at 140 mph you're asked to look at various locations to see the effect it has on where your car steers, and you're ultimately taught the right and wrong places to be looking, and why. It's an excellent example of not just being taught things and told to accept them, but actually having it demonstrated to you.

A major aspect of the training as a whole is the constant building up of skills throughout the day. When you learn a skill in one exercise, you'll always have to take that skill to the next exercise and learn something new on top. You are never taught something and told to just take it away with you. Instead, the sequence of exercises is expertly designed such that each lesson has you practising all the previous lessons, while adding one more on top. So without knowing it your new skills are getting a lot of practice through the day and you'll see certain aspects of your driving come on leaps and bounds. Think of it like an onion - you start with the middle and your skills are gradually layered over top, leaving you with the finished, tasty article (but hopefully with no-one crying).

Something to remember is that you're not going to leave this day beating The Stig around the Top Gear track. During the day you are taught various techniques, but like everything you need the practice to make them perfect. Keep practicing the techniques during your track days and sprints and you'll see your driving improve. I was doing most of the exercises at a speed less than I would normally be driving if it were a track day; instead I was concentrating on my technique because if you get that right the speed will naturally follow.

The instructors are all highly qualified in relevant fields, and as I was with Colin he is the only one I can comment on, but I'm sure they are all just as good. I found Colin to be very calm and never flustered which was a great help, as you need to keep your mind focussed but not panicked. When I was barrelling down the long straight at 120 mph, ready to stand on my brakes with one elbow resting on the door, one hand limply on the wheel and the other hand lolling on the gear stick, Colin simply reminded me with all the calmness of a driving instructor that I might not be displaying the optimum limb configuration for the task at hand. Similarly when I almost fell off the handling circuit Colin was completely unfazed and merely remarked that I was "carrying too much speed".

Colin was also excellent at tailoring each exercise to my driving weaknesses. Within a few minutes of each exercise Colin can tell where you need polishing and guides you in the right direction. Not just for that exercise, but if you are weak somewhere he keeps prompting you on that technique through the subsequent exercises too. Although you are there with 7 other people, you do get the day quite well tailored to your own driving. The fact that you are always with the same instructor is a massive factor in this.

The final events of the day take place on the steering pad, which is basically a big concrete circle with circular lines at various distances from the centre. This is also where you congregate between exercises and while waiting your turn, so is the only time of the day you get to see what others are doing as every other time the action takes place too far away. Not being able to see most of the action might not be all bad, especially if you're the type of person who would feel too self-conscious doing these things under public scrutiny.

The understeer and oversteer exercises on the pad are a great way to experience the car's traction and feeling on the limit and over it (there is about 10 cars worth of run-off, you're perfectly safe). It's a great confidence-builder in the car and hopefully also helped dispel some AYC-related myths, and as a IX GT was present it was a good chance to see how the non-AYC car behaved. None of us managed to provoke any real oversteer in our cars, even the GT.

With all the training over it was time to put things to the test in a timed gymkhana whose course included aspects to test all of the things we'd be taught up until now. Driving the Caterham was a lot of fun and the closest thing you'll get to a grown-up's go-kart. It would have been good to have done the gymkhana at the start of the day and the end to give you a "before and after", but with everything you're taught there just isn't the time.

I left the day feeling like I'd been given a very good foundation in all the skills needed to be a better, faster driver. Some of my driving skills had been immediately improved just with the practice on the day and my steering in particular was far smoother. I learned aspects of driving that I'd never even thought about before, and have had my attention refocused to concentrate on the more important aspects of how I'm driving. Be you a novice or experienced driver, everyone will learn and improve on this day and it comes highly recommended.
